According to the Report on Research and Investment Prospects of China's N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) Industry (Version 2022) released by Limu Information Consulting, NMP is mainly used in new energy industries such as lithium ion batteries and new material industries such as aramid, polyphenylene sulfide and polyimide in this century. In the production of lithium-ion batteries, NMP acts as the cathode material, binder and excellent organic solvent for preparing mixed liquid with other substances for lithium-ion batteries.
There are many synthetic routes of NMP, but there are mainly three industrial synthetic routes: γ- Non catalytic continuous production of NMP process for butyrolactone and monomethylamine, non catalytic continuous production of NMP process for GBL and mixed methylamine, and dehydrogenation amination of 1,4-butanediol to prepare NMP process.
Internationally, the major manufacturers of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) include BASF, Mitsubishi Chemical Co., Ltd., Ryonde and ISP.
Although the output of N-methylpyrrolidone in China has increased rapidly, there is still room for development in high-end fields. It can be seen from the import and export data in recent years that the number of N-methylpyrrolidone imports in China is still large and increasing year by year. In 2017, China imported 0.88 million tons of N-methylpyrrolidone, a year-on-year increase of 41.93%. China's high-end N-methylpyrrolidone products are still insufficient.
The development prospect of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) industry is a microcosm of the development of China's lithium power industry. Overcapacity and low-level price competition will exist for a long time, and quality improvement and transformation and upgrading will face urgent pressure.
